The cool and long-awaited antitheft application by Samir, nAlertMe, is finally out and available for free from The AikonLab Website.

Some months ago, the talented french developer, Samir, showed his new antitheft application for Symbian, nAlertMe.

nAlertMe is "an accelerometer-based freeware application that sounds a loud alarm", when any unauthorized movement of the mobile phone is detected.

So, imagine yourself reading or studying at the university, or taking a drink in a pub. Very ofter people (and me too), put their phones on a table; with the risk of theft by someone that could quickly grab your phone without having the time to react or to notice the theft.

nAlertMe makes the theft very difficult: if the phone is taken, just after a couple of seconds a very loud siren plays, and it is only possible to stop it by swithching the phone off. But in that case, the thief will not have the time to think, and will probably prefer to drop the phone down and start running, before everybody get on him!

So, how could we take our phone without making the siren play? Simply, to deactivate the alarm you must put your phone in a defined positions sequence, like showed in the picture on the left.

One of my worst fears about the upcoming Symbian 5th edition was about its compatibility with older applications. This is because there are today thousands of good apps for 3rd edition phones, and making a completely new Os could require years to remake and update all the existing apps.

However, it seems that the Incompatibility that regarder the upgrade from 2rd edition Symbian towards 3rd edition will not realize this time. You can see in this screenshot the new Nokia 5800 running the 3rd edition version of X-plore by Lonelycatgames, one of the most popular applications for Symbian. It seems that older applications will run with the help on an emulator, that will add a keypad in the lower part of the screen to compensate the lack of support for the touch UI.

Imagine this story: You are sitting in the train (or in the bus, subway etc.) awaiting your return home after an hard working day. You are very tired, so you put on your headphones and start to listen some cool mp3′s on your brand new Nokia N95 8gb. But when you are arrived to the stop, you stop listening and put your phone in the pocket. There’s plenty of people that are coming off the train/bus/metro with you. Somebody touch you on the right, on the left. Somebody pushes you, but you don’t care, this is happening almost every day. But just minutes after, you remember you were listening to music. You open the pocket and…. there is nothing inside!

This is an invented story, but well, not really. This really happened to me. Unfortunately, at that time I had not an S60, and, more important, Guardian by Marco Bellino was still not here. So I lost my phone forever. But today, everything has changed. If this happened to me today, the first thing would be that, just some minute after the phone is stolen, the thief would change the sim card inside the phone with his own sim card. He would think that "the number is changed, and nobody can contact me".

If you have Guardian, this is wrong.

When somebody changes the sim card in your phone with Guardian, an invisible SMS is sent to a pre-configured number (your second number, your mom, your girlfriend) telling the phone number of the thief, and many other info like, for example, the sim card identifier code and the cell-id. But there’s more… With Guardian being active, when the sim is changed, you can remotely lock your messages, pictures, contacts or any other personal info. He will not be able to access your data. And there’s more…. with Guardian Plantinum edition, the phone’s GPS is automatically enabled in total stealth. A simple sms sent to the thief number, that is totally invisible, will retrieve all the GPS localization data, and you will be able to immediately locate your phone on Google Maps. This is the killer feature, you can know in real time where your phone is. Just go, and retrieve it! Many more options are included: GPS tracking (real time position tracking each X minutes); application locks; remotely delete your contacts/sms/photo/video. Those are just few examples. And you can retreive the thief’s contact book, sent/received calls and messages. And all this without being noticed. Or, if you want to, you can remotely start an ultra-loud siren, or you can send a fake sms to the thief. Guardian Comes with three different versions: Guardian Free, Guardian Gold, Guardian Platinum.

I personally think that the Platinum is the better version, because it enables GPS tracking. This is a killer feature that could really save your phone. Today I’m talking of Profimal. As stated on the official website:

ProfiMail is a powerful e-mail client for mobile devices. It allows you to read your mail on go,
and send text with attachments directly from your device.
Send photos, recorded sound or simply text messages to friends, from anywhere.
Through your mobile Internet connection.

I’ve been using profimail since I got my Nokia N70, on 2006. It has a great number of functions, I use it to regularly check 2 email inboxes at the same time, it supports attachments and address book; it supports pop mail and Imap as well; Gmail works great with it.
But there is one feature that is really good to me. In the Menu, go to “Tools” and “Configuration”. Scroll down to “Auto-update time” and set the desired amount of minutes after which the phone will search for upcoming email. Then minimize the application.

If you put 5, for example, the phone will look for new mail every 5 minutes. Once tha mail arrived you will have a little blue mail icon on the upper rigt corner of the screen, even in standby mode.

Important note: if you connect using your 3g/hdspa connection, the phone will remain connected for all the time. So make sure you have a flat data rate with your provider. This trick also takes much battery, so be warned. In the video attached below you can see a sample of how all that works.

It’s Called Autothemes, and lets you change your theme with another at a fixed hour you choose or with a specific profile. It’s fully customizable. To know more about it, go here.

Someone may think that such an application is not very useful, but in fact I found out it to be very smart.

For example, I programmed three different themes during the day:

One for the morning, with bright background and black text for great readability under the morning sunlight.

Than one for the afternoon, for having a little change after lunch another one with quite bright background.

Then, when the sun goes down, I planned a more “fashion” theme, to show up my new creation to my firends (in the dark, it’s better).

Evening & Night:

A very cool “gadget” application is on the way, following an idea of Mauikek, and developed by Sarawut of Landscape-pro.

Just shake your device to automatically change your theme with a random one choosen by your phone!

It works only with mobile phones that have an accelerometer (n95, n95 8gb, n82 etc.).

Unfortunately, I have an n73, so I can not try it!
